Art of the Titles Analysis

We were asked to look on a website call Art of the Titles to look at thriller openings, this was to inspire our very own thriller opening title sequence. Our task was to pick a title sequence and analyse it. I chose the film Nerve which is a thriller/crime film, I have previously watched the film and really enjoyed it. I chose this particular film because I believe the opening titles give the audience something interesting to look at; each persons name has a different way of being presented which makes the titles unique to each individual.

'The Fall' - Gender

Although I completed this as part of my study of the representation of gender for my AS exam, it is relevant to the my coursework as, in planning for this, I will need to consider how the representation of gender is constructed through the use of camera shots, mise-en-scene, editing and sound. This will hopefully enable me to represent characters in a variety of different ways in my film opening.

Final Product!

This is the final version of our preliminary task, we hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it! More information on how we built up to this is explained in previous posts which explain the process of pre-production like 'Location' and 'The storyboard'. The following post will be an evaluation of our final product. Enjoy!

Location

For our preliminary task we needed to find the perfect place to find our short mystery film. People may not realise but the location sets the mood for the whole production, everything has to fit together and so the location had to be exactly what we wanted. Our group wanted to make the short film as realistic as we could, considering we were in a school, so we built our story around the fact that we were in school during filming.

Our ideal room was to be relatively small with very little lighting; the lighting issue was a big thing for us because we wanted to keep one of our characters identities a secret and this would have been almost impossible for us to do if we had a brightly lit room. Luckily, the room we found met our rather high standards! It was small but not too small and only had a small window. The only fault we could find was that the window had no blind and so a lot of light came streaming through, however, we dealt with this issue by covering the majority of the window with black paper which stopped most light from entering.

Below are a few pictures of our location and also some actions shots of us whilst filming to give you a behind the scenes experience. Enjoy!

The storyboard

During my previous post, I mentioned my preliminary task and explained what we had to do; my group: Katie, Jess, Lauren and myself, have now come up with a story to follow! Me and Jess mainly do the directing and filming and Katie and Lauren are the actresses. Our film is based on a deal that's going down in school, below is the storyboard showing how we imagine our film to turn out!
